CamLETS is short for Cambridge Local Exchange Trading System, and the organisation has been operating since 1993. CamLETS is a kind of network aiming to enable the free exchange of skills, services and goods. The idea is to pay for these services not with Pounds Sterling, but with a Complementary Currency – ‘CAMS’. Using the currency is part of the fun, and contributes to the building of strong community ties.
The organisation is open to anyone in the Cambridge area, and welcomes members with skills and goods of all kinds – including cooking skills and fresh or organic food! CamLETS is part of a growing movement within civil society which emphasises the importance of acting locally, sharing skills and providing services which feed back into the community.
