The gleaning season is in full swing, with opportunities to volunteer to get crops out of the ground that would otherwise be wasted, giving the produce to charity.
Gleaning Cambridge, a branch of the national Gleaning Network, arranges for groups of volunteers to go to farms in East Anglia and South Lincolnshire, where farmers have good crops they can’t sell. The volunteers harvest the crop and it is passed on to FareShare or to local charities, such as Ferry Project in Wisbech to be made into meals for vulnerable people.
Transport costs are covered and often shared transport can be arranged. The next gleaning opportunity is Wednesday August 27th, but there will be others. Email Vick@feeding5k.org.
