With regards to local food it is important that shoppers appreciate the distinction between buying locally produced food and supporting local independent retailers. While supporting local independent shops is certainly to be encouraged it should be remembered that the food for sale may not necessarily have been grown locally or produced sustainably. Independent shops are more flexible when it comes to sourcing their stock and therefore represent an achievable target for making sustainable food more readily available around the city. Stocking sustainable food products is good for independent retailers as it distinguishes them from multiple retailers. Committing to the CSFC charter will inspire customer confidence and the retailer would benefit from all the publicity associated with the charter. CSFC will help any retailers who sign up to the food charter to fulfil their commitment by introducing them to suppliers of sustainable food products, and to identify which products classify as being sustainable food within the shop so that consumers can make an informed choice.
