Arjuna started out as a market stall in 1970, and opened a shop and restaurant on Mill Road within a few months. The shop has continued to grow since then, establishing itself as the oldest vegetarian wholefoods store in Cambridge.
Forty years on, the co-operative owes its continued success to its loyal customers and supportive community, as well as its ability to meet the demands of vegetarians, vegans and alternative food consumers of the city. Arjuna also remains the go-to shop for health foods and foods for specialist diets, such as lactose- or gluten-free products. Arjuna provides food sourced from local producers, such as Phil’s Pestos, Waterland Organic Eggs, Snakehall Farm and Maud Foster Mill to name but a few. Local food is central to the ethics of the shop, and is linked to their desire to combat climate change by shopping locally (and without cars, if possible!).
