Arjuna Wholefoods

Arjuna is a vegetarian wholefood shop on Mill Road in Cambridge. It is the first business to achieve the gold standard business award.

Julien from Arjuna said on receiving the Award; “The award given by Cambridge Sustainable Food acknowledges all the efforts Arjuna has been making to promote a sustainable food system. It encourages us to carry on and we hope it may inspire other businesses in Cambridge to implement greater sustainability in the food system.”

Formed as a workers’ cooperative in the 1970’s, Arjuna has sustainability written into its founding document with all members of the co-op given equal decision making powers about how the business is run, and receiving equal pay.

Arjuna stocks a wide range of vegan and vegetarian foods plus wheat free choices and foods for those with allergies. Sourcing from more than 20 local suppliers including fruit and veg, bread, cosmetics and chocolate by raw chocolatiers RAWR, Arjuna also buys from 20 organic suppliers including the award winning Karma who donate surplus funds to development projects. In addition, Arjuna stocks Fairtrade coffee, sugar, chocolate and bananas as well as Fairtrade stationery, cards, incense and bags.

Running a vegan in-house kitchen which cooks take-away meals from scratch, they use as much organic produce from the shop as is commercially viable. The kitchen is committed to a policy of no added refined sugar, instead using coconut sugar, fruit juice concentrates and sugar alternatives such as agave syrup.

Arjuna actively promotes vegan, organic, sugar free, locally produced natural foodstuffs. All dairy is organic and vegetarian society approved. They only sell fresh organic fruit and vegetables and operate a buying order with local first, regional second, nationally third, then EU and lastly the rest of the world. They will not sell any fresh fruit or veg which have been air freighted. All kitchen waste, food which cannot be donated, and food waste from the warehouse goes into a green bin.

You can learn more about their long history at 12 Mill Road in the recently published book “Wholefood Heroes” by David Jarvis.
