bio-bean looks to expand to Cambridge!

Interested in turning your waste coffee grounds into biofuel? Look no further as bio-bean is hoping to work with businesses here in Cambridge!

Learn more about this exciting opportunity below with a message from Julia at bio-bean:

bio-bean is an award-winning clean technology company that has industrialised the process of turning waste coffee grounds into advanced biofuels. We work within existing waste management infrastructure to collect waste coffee grounds from cafes, offices, restaurants, transport hubs, instant coffee factories etc. which are then recycled into highly calorific advanced biofuels. At our world’s first waste coffee recycling factory in Alconbury, we produce biomass pellets and briquettes, or ‘Coffee Logs which can heat your home more efficiently for less.

An estimated 500,000 tonnes of waste coffee grounds are produced annually in the UK, with the majority either sent to landfill sites or incinerated – releasing thousands of tonnes of CO2. Recycling coffee waste as a separate waste stream has a number of environmental and commercial benefits, including the reduction of CO2 emissions and reducing waste disposal costs.

To date, we have mostly worked with waste management companies to service collection routes within the M25 area, and are now collecting from over 600 locations. However, with increasing demand from businesses outside the M25 to have their coffee waste recycled through us, we are working hard to expand our collection route to enable us to offer them a solution. One of our next areas of focus is Cambridge given its proximity to our factory and the concentration of businesses producing waste coffee.

Through the excellent work of Cambridge Sustainable Food with regards to promoting a sustainable local food system, we hope to extend this by promoting a sustainable way of recycling Cambridge’s coffee waste with a collection round potentially up and running in the early part of this year.

Cambridge Sustainable Food have been kind enough to allow us to use their platform to reach out to some of the businesses in the Cambridge area that may be interested in having their waste coffee grounds collected and recycled.
