christmas-581754_640Christmas is a time of indulgence and delicious food, causing many of us to over buy and creating a lot of food waste. However, it only takes a little bit of preparation to ensure that your Christmas is as waste-free as possible. We have compiled a list of handy tips which will help you to spend and waste less whilst still enjoying all of the usual tasty Christmas treats!

  • Write a Christmas shopping list

Make sure to note down all of the ingredients you will need for Christmas and don’t forget to check what you already have in stock –  you 28409_l-300x200may be surprised to find that you already have some dried goods hiding at the back of your cupboard that you have forgotten about. There’s also a lot of temptation to give into seasonal offers at the supermarket and impulse buy, but having a list with you will help you keep focus.

  • Make the most of your freezer

You can freeze a lot of items, such as hard cheese and veg which can save you time and stop you from throwing food that you’ve spent good money on into the bin.

  •  Have a guest list for Christmas day

Knowing how many you are catering for will help you plan your shopping list, and give you more of an idea on portion sizes. Ask your guests beforehand what they like and what they don’t – this will help you to know what to cook more of and what you can do without.

  • Avoid highly perishable food gifts

If you plan on giving food as a gift, make sure to check the ‘use by’ label and try and buy as close to Christmas as you can so that the recipient has ample time to  enjoy their present.
